Haunted Fairfield
In memory of Gary Alleway
This story is written in memory of Gary Alleway,
May 1966 - 14/02/03
I have never noted or written this story before, it all comes from memory and there are many grey areas. As far as I can remember it would have been around about Halloween 1981, We (The Winston Crescent Gang) were out searching for a scare. We had done the cemetery's and were now wandering the streets after midnight.
I remember it was cold, their were several of us, Somehow we ended up at Biggleswade town football ground and were playing about in the small stadium. A member of the group I can't remember who had the bright idea to walk up the bridleway passing Fairfield house, to the railway crossing then back around to Winston Crescent. After a while we were all feeling tired and so we began walking up the bridleway.
Many of the houses that now line one side of the bridleway behind the hedge were not built or were in the process of being built.
I remember it was quite a dark and creepy place there is a large old house halfway along the bridleway, it at that time had dogs which I remember were barking loudly and so most of us began to run a little way towards Fairfield house.
As the bridleway approached the drive of the house it headed off to the right and around the grounds of the house. To the right of the Bridleway opposite the house there was what looked like it may have been a large pond with an Island in the middle, surrounded by tall and large trees, most Horse chestnut and willow I think. It was roughly in this area where Gary and a couple of others who were in front of us suddenly stopped, frozen to the spot. As we caught up with those in front we could see they were just standing there, staring into the tree tops. Those of us who had just caught up wondered what they were looking at. They said they had seen a creature, monkey or person jumping from branch to branch in the trees above them.
I saw nothing that night but on many occasions over the next twenty years I asked Gary if it was true and he always insisted it was.
Gary will be missed by all that knew him.....(and local stocks of Diamond White;-))
